How to Conduct a Comprehensive Literature Review: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

A literature review can look straightforward from the outside: find some papers, read them, summarise the findings and add references. In practice, that approach usually produces a collection of summaries rather than a strong academic review.

When I work through a literature review, I find it more useful to think of the process as building an evidence-based argument. I need to establish what researchers already know, where they disagree, which findings are reliable, and what still needs to be investigated.

Now you have something to discuss.

10. Deal with contradictory findings

Don’t be tempted to remove studies simply because they disagree with your preferred argument.

Contradictions can actually make a literature review more interesting.

If two studies reach different conclusions, investigate why.

The difference might come from:

  • Different samples
  • Different countries
  • Different definitions
  • Different research methods
  • Different time periods
  • Different measures
  • Different theoretical assumptions

For example, one study might find that remote learning increases student satisfaction, while another finds the opposite. That doesn’t necessarily mean one researcher is wrong.

That statement is difficult to defend unless you have genuinely demonstrated it.

A stronger gap could involve an unresolved disagreement, an overlooked population, a methodological weakness or a context that has received little attention.

Existing research has examined the relationship between online learning and student engagement extensively, but relatively little attention has been given to how this relationship differs between first-year and final-year students.

That gives your research a clearer reason for existing.

The literature review should therefore lead naturally toward your research objectives or questions.

12. Organise the chapter around an argument

There is no universal structure for every dissertation, but I generally find a thematic structure more effective than an author-by-author approach.

A possible structure is:

Introduction

Define the topic, explain the scope and establish the purpose of the review.

Theoretical background

Introduce the main concepts or theories relevant to the study.

Theme 1

Discuss the first major area of evidence.

Theme 2

Examine the next important theme and compare it with the previous research.

Theme 3

Explore another significant area, including disagreements or limitations.

Research gap

Bring the evidence together and explain what remains unresolved.

Conclusion

Summarise the main findings and show how they lead into your research.

The exact headings will depend on your discipline. What matters is the logical progression.

13. Write critically, not mechanically

A useful test is to look at each paragraph and ask whether you are doing anything beyond reporting what somebody else found.

A paragraph that contains several citations can still be weak if all it does is summarise.

Try to connect sources.

For example:

Several studies associate flexible learning arrangements with improved access to education. However, the evidence for improved engagement is less consistent. While some researchers report greater participation, others suggest that reduced interaction can undermine students’ involvement. Taken together, these findings indicate that flexibility alone may not determine engagement; the design of the learning experience may also be important.

Notice what is happening here.

The paragraph isn’t organised around one researcher. The studies are being used to establish a broader point.

That is the writing style I would aim for throughout the review.

14. Use citations responsibly

Every source should support the point you are making.

Don’t cite an article simply because its title sounds relevant.

I also recommend checking the original source before quoting a statistic or making a strong claim. This is particularly important when a figure has been repeated across several articles.

For example, if a paper reports that 62% of respondents experienced a particular outcome, check what the 62% actually represents, how many people participated and how the researchers collected the data.

A number without context can easily become misleading.

15. Revise the review as an argument

The first draft is rarely the best draft.

Once you’ve written the chapter, read it again without worrying about grammar. Look at the logic.

  • Have I acknowledged conflicting evidence?
  • Am I relying too heavily on one source?
  • Are important claims supported?
  • Have I explained why the evidence matters?
  • Does the research gap actually follow from the discussion?

Then edit the language.

Remove repetitive phrases, unnecessary introductions and sentences that simply restate what the citation already tells the reader.

The result should sound like an informed researcher explaining the evidence—not like a database of abstracts stitched together.

A few problems appear repeatedly in dissertation literature reviews.

Using too many sources without analysing them

A long reference list is not proof of critical thinking.

Searching only one database

Important research can be missed when the search is too narrow.

Depending entirely on recent papers

Recent research matters, but foundational theories and landmark studies may still be essential.

Ignoring studies that disagree

Contradictory evidence can reveal where the real research problem lies.

Show the reader how the gap emerges from the existing literature.
